Science News Roundup: An Alien World with Two Suns, An Ancient 'In Between' Sea Creature, Visual Memories Made into Video & More! [VIDEOS]

It’s been an amazing month for news from the world of Science and technology — and this in a year full of amazing discoveries…Ahh, what a wondrous time to be alive (if only the economy was doing better, but I digress…) Topics: an extra solar planet with an extra sun, an ancient ‘in-between’ see creature, flying robots that learn how to flock, creating a video from the brain’s visual memories, and, lastly, Wangari Maathai, crusader for environmental justice (and Nobel Prize winner) dies, but her work will live on…

Giant Sun Spot Turns Toward Earth – More Large Flares Possible (VIDEO)

Active Region (AR) 1302 is slowly coming into position where it directly faces the Earth. The region contains a “behemoth” sunspot — several times larger than the Earth — named sunspot 1302.

The sunspot has already been the source of two ‘X-class’ solar flares (‘X’ signifying the most extreme known); the first, measuring an X1.4, on September 22, and the second, an X1.9, coming just three days later on Sept. 24. Are more X-class flares on the way, and on their way towards Earth?

FOX News' Take on Non-NASA Alien & Global Warming Paper

Well, you knew FOX News was going to bring the crazy as soon as you saw the news about “NASA’s” new paper on possible results of a planetary encounter with aliens (actually, it’s not from NASA.. though, many are inaccurately saying it is).

Of course, FOX reporters said it was a NASA study (again, it wasn’t). Furthermore, they totally framed the story in a way that made it sound crazy, rather than making it clear that it was a thought experiment analyzing “a broad range of contact scenarios in terms of whether contact with ETI would benefit or harm humanity.”

Would Contact by E.T.'s Save Us or Destroy Us? – Paper Causes Web Stir

‘Would Contact with Extraterrestrials Benefit or Harm Humanity? A Scenario Analysis’ is the title of a recently published paper that has been making the rounds and causing a bit of a hullabaloo this past week. The “controversy” stems from an erroneous attribution of the paper to NASA. Regardless, the paper is newsworthy for what it is willing to consider, which is the fate of humanity post first contact.

Astro-Physicists Discover Anti-matter Trapped in Earth's Magnetic Field

Previous theoretical predictions by solar scientists have asserted that the Earth’s geo-magnetic field, or magnetosphere, should be capable of trapping or containing anti-matter. Now comes confirmation, via the international PAMELA satellite mission, of a narrow band of anti-protons trapped between the inner and outer Van Allen radiation belts, part of the Earth’s magnetosphere. The discovery constitutes “the most abundant source of antiprotons near the Earth.” The trapped anti-matter may one day provide a fuel source for spacecraft.

Water on Mars? Scientists See Possibility of Salty Water in Martian 'Seasonal Flows'

A team of scientists, led by Alfred S. McEwan of the Lunar and Planetary Laboratory, University of Arizona, Tucson, may have identified the tell-tale signs of “seasonal flows” (small channels attributable to downhill water movements) on certain Martian slopes. The potentially game-changing discovery, which was enabled by an analysis performed by an undergraduate student, has got the astronomy, planetary and astrobiology science communities rather excited.

Space News Round-up: Magnetic Bubbles, Mega Blasts, Missing Mass & Mucho 'Rogue' Planets {VIDEO}

Over the past several weeks, a flurry of intriguing and surprising outer space-related discoveries have been made, ones that warrant a recap for those who may have missed them. I have selected four of the more fascinating ones, plus one related, really cool piece with a video, and they are: 1] Magnetic Bubbles Discovered at the Edge of Our Solar System, 2] Biggest Blast Ever Seen In Our Universe, 3] Aussie Grad Student Finds Missing Mass in Galaxies, 4] ‘Rogue’ Planets, More Plentiful than Stars, May Be Roaming the Galaxy, and 5] (An extra-special space goody:) A Supernova Sonata – Turning Exploding Stars into Music

Dude, Surf's Up on the Sun — Classic 'Surfer' Waves Seen in Solar Atmosphere {VIDEO}

Surf’s up big time on the Sun, or just above the sun, in this case. Seems like NASA’s high resolution Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) has caught conclusive evidence of classic “surfer waves” in the solar atmosphere — looking just like the kind in the opening sequence of ‘Hawaii Five-O’.

Large Solar Flare Erupts with 'Spectacular' Coronal Mass Ejection {VIDEO}

This Spring has been pretty exciting for solar activity…Following the ending of the longest ‘solar minimum’ in more than a century, our sun’s activity (solar cycle 24) picked up considerably over the course of the month of May, culminating in an impressive M-2 class (medium size) solar flare and “spectacular” coronal mass ejection (CME) on June 7.

NASA Confirms Einstein's Theory in 'Epic' Space-Time Experiment [VIDEO]

It was a truly “epic” mission; after nearly 47 years of planning, operating, monitoring and analyzing the data from a special satellite-probe known as Gravity Probe B (GP-B), NASA scientists are announcing definitive confirmation of Einstein’s famous theoretical prediction of the “warping” of space around the Earth due to its orbit and spinning motion through ‘space-time’.

Did the Impending 'Super Moon' Cause Japan's Earthquake?

astrologer has also predicted that such a close perigee would/must somehow perturb the earth’s (tectonic) integrity so much that it will trigger major earthquakes and even volcanoes (not simply severe storms). Although he is not clear on the exact lunar-geo-mechanisms that would produce these quakes, never-the-less this lunar-induced disaster scenario quickly set the Web abuzz with yet another wave of doom-and-gloom “apocalypticism.”

Timing is everything.

Good News for Scorpios – Earth's Wobble Now Makes You a Libra

Sometimes old knowledge makes for “new” news, even viral news. Case in point:sky-watchers have known for more than two millennia that the Earth has a irregular wobble in its orbit — what’s known as precession — which over time makes its orientation to the constellations, and to our sun, change. This precessional change means that,

"Humans Don't Create as Much CO2 as Volcanoes" is Totally Wrong [VIDEOS]

A common claim of climate change disinformers is that humans don’t release a significant amount of CO2. Bringing that absurdity to another level, you may even see claims out there that volcanoes release more CO2 than humans. Way wrong. “Human activities release more than 130 times the amount of CO2 emitted by volcanoes — the

Discovery of Cosmic 'Rings' – An Echo from Before the Bang?

What might appear at first to be a rather psychedelic rendering of the Target (department store) logo, above, is actually a map of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) showing the location of collisions, or “energy transfers”, between our cosmic “aeon” and…the one that came before. That’s right.Β  Each ring is a record, preserved as a

Here Comes the Sun

NASA reported last year that β€œif anything,” the Sun contributed β€œa very slight overall cooling in the past 25 years.” Despite that many man-made global warming deniers will try tell you that it is because of sunspots that we are seeing so much global warming. Another major 2007 study on the Sun found that “over
