Lake Superior Surrounded by Fall Colours (Photo of the Day)

For those of you not living in North America or are stereotypically American and aren’t aware of the world beyond your own three metre personal space, Lake Superior is the largest of the Great Lakes of North America, and can be seen beautifully surrounded by the beginnings of autumn colour.

Bounded on the north by the Canadian province of Ontario and the US state of Minnesota and to the south by the US states of Wisconsin and Michigan, Lake Superior is also the largest freshwater lake in the world according to surface area (if Lake Huron and Lake Michigan are accorded the title of being a lake each rather than one somewhat connected single lake) and the third largest freshwater lake according to volume.

The image was taken by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer on board NASA’s Terra satellite on October 2nd.

The lake is bounded by slowly yellowing leaves which can be seen in this stunning image which can be seen even clearer if you embiggen the above image.
