As reported the other day, actress Lucy Lawless (Xena) joined Greenpeace and climbed an oil rig in New Zealand that was supposed to be headed to the Arctic. Lucy was arrested yesterday for this civil disobedience, as were the other environmental activists. Regarding some of her reasons for joining Greenpeace’s work, Lucy writes: “I’ve got three kids. My sole biological reason for being on this planet is to ensure that they can flourish, and they can’t do that in a filthy, degraded environment…. We need to stand up while we still can.”
Greenpeace, meanwhile, notes that while only 7 activists went up the rig, 133,000 came down it with them. Say what? To be more specific, from the time the activists went up the rig to the time they were brought down it, 133,000 activists joined in online signed a petition to Shell executives pressuring it not to drill for oil in the Arctic.
