470+ Endangered Sea Turtles Killed by BP Oil Spill (so far)

470 endangered sea turtles and thousands of birds officially killed by BP oil spill so far. Many more covered in oil and on the brink of death.

Well, BP has stopped burning endangered sea turtles alive and has apparently gotten the leak stopped, but official reports show that, as of yesterday, at least 470 endangered sea turtles and approximately 3,000 birds have been killed or covered in oil (again, these are just the official statistics — true figures are likely to be much higher).

In addition to the 470 endangered sea turtles that were officially found dead, over 200 more have been found covered in oil and surely some of those won’t survive.

For a day-by-day update on these figures, visit the Deepwater Horizon Response site.

As if endangered sea turtles didn’t have enough to worry about, this BP oil spill disaster serves them what no animal or species should have to face. The individuals that die or are covered in oil face great suffering, and this may be the critical death blow for some of the species altogether.

The question I asked earlier this week is: have we learned our lesson?
