Al Gore turned from a waffling politician to a leading climate action activist a few years ago. If someone mentions Al Gore now, probably the #1 association that comes to mind is global warming, due to his wildly popular and influential film “An Inconvenient Truth” and resulting Nobel Peace Prize. While there are probably thousands upon thousands of trolls spreading misinformation about Al Gore and climate change across the internet, confusing the public and hurting a very respectable man’s reputation, Al Gore and his message are tremendously needed today.
We are facing unprecedented catastrophe and Gore is doing his best to avert that. His latest effort, launched yesterday, is the “Climate Reality Project.” Here’s Gore’s introduction to that:
The climate crisis is a reality, and we are seeing its impacts in extreme weather all around the world. Using the same deceitful playbook as big tobacco used years before to mislead the public about the dangers of smoking, oil and coal companies and their allies are now deceiving the public about climate change. They have nearly unlimited resources to sow doubt, but we have one critical advantage: Reality is on our side.
That’s why today I’m launching a new, global campaign to broadcast the reality of the climate crisis. This campaign is called The Climate Reality Project. We will invite people to discover for themselves the truth about climate change, and reject the mistruths they hear every day.
Climate Reality will start with a global event on September 14-15 called 24 Hours of Reality. Over 24 hours, in multiple languages and in 24 time zones, we will bring the world together to reveal the full truth, scope and impact of the climate crisis.
Looks like a great project!
As Gore noted just a few days before, the American Association for the Advancement of Science has gone out of its way to issue a statement condemning unwarranted and extremely harmful attacks on climate scientists. The intro to its statement goes:
“We are deeply concerned by the extent and nature of personal attacks on climate scientists. Reports of harassment, death threats, and legal challenges have created a hostile environment that inhibits the free exchange of scientific findings and ideas and makes it difficult for factual information and scientific analyses to reach policymakers and the public.”
Hopefully this new project, and other projects promoting a clear understanding of the climate change truth, will help move the world towards the action that is needed to avoid a completely catastrophic climatic transformation.
