Cato Institute Ad Calls Climate Change "Grossly Overstated"

climate change, Cato InstituteFull page ads questioning President Obama’s stance on climate change were published in the Washington Post, the New York Times, the Chicago Tribune, the Washington Times, and the Los Angeles Times last week, paid for by the Cato Institute.

Environmentalists, journalists, and scientists alike are calling foul and poking holes in the assertion that “there has been no net global warming for over a decade now.”

The definitive statement on global warming comes from a 2007 study by the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, a group of scientists from more than 130 nations. They concluded that the “warming of the climate system is unequivocal, as is now evident from observations of increases in global average air and ocean temperatures, widespread melting of snow and ice and rising global average sea level.” The group also concluded that there is “very high confidence that the global average net effect of human activities since 1750 has been one of warming.”

“The “global warming stopped” meme is particularly lame since it relies on both a feigned ignorance of the statistics of short periods and being careful about which data set you use. It also requires cherry-picking the start year, had the period been “exactly a decade” or 12 years then all the trends are positive.”

Jeffrey, your lame ‘follow the money’ rhetoric is like saying, “Sure the Christians collect donations, but they just use the money to build fancy churches and pay the clergy.” Why are people investing in renewable energy and other green tech? Could it be that it makes both financial AND ethical sense in the long term? To not send people to die in other countries just so we can stroll the Mall of America? To not terrorize Nigerian citizens who don’t want their homes polluted beyond recovery by Shell mercenaries? Whose pabulum are you sucking Jeffrey?

  2. Fact remains majority of science researchers & experts whose realm is biology and/or climatology do not support the argument that climate change is man-made. One need not be a scientist to understand that – otherwise we’d have to make up preposterous claims to support the natural cycle of climate change that has occurred likely since there was an Earth… and man was not driving Hummers in the 12th Century. The trick is – follow the money. Who has billions of funding at stake? Who has enormous money to lose? Whose careers, book deals & fame would falter without the fear of man-made global warming to keep the money coming in? That said – it truly is a “Green” issue. Green(backs).

  4. GLOBAL WARMING EXPERIMENT. Put the CATO gang in a garage with one fossil fuel car (it is the only type of car that consumers can buy for the last century, as the CATO gang and the oil companies made electric cars illegal) After 20 minutes let us see if their are any comments then, about global warming. (PLEASE DO NOT DO THIS EXPERIMENT) Isn’t the planet EARTH our closed garage?? In our lives, let us do every thing that will improve our environment, and not help companies and companies think tanks, that want to keep burning fossil fuels which our destroying the earth’s environment.
