You aren’t likely to see this ad in magazines or newspapers these days:
However, unfortunately, you can see the same kind of thing when it comes to global warming & climate change.
“As Naomi Oreskes and Erik Conway point out in their book ‘The Merchants of Doubt,’ the fossil fuel industry and the hard right have used the same tactics as the tobacco industry to seed doubt about the danger of climate change,” LA Times contributor Auden Schendler writes. “In fact, they’ve often used the same people and institutions to deliver that message. Although that’s depressing (fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me), it’s also hopeful, because we beat tobacco — or at least we’re winning, with smoking rates having dropped from 45% of the population in 1954 to less than 20% today.”
One of my favorite videos on this topic (the manufacturing of doubt) is here:
But there are many more videos and articles explaining the link and the rehashed methods. The important thing, I think, is that we spread info on what is happening to more and more people. The only real way to combat massive, industry-funded propaganda is with people power! So, with that said, share this post! 😀
