Sarah Palin has said many times that the polar bear habitat is safe, and there’s no need to classify them as a “threatened” species.  Yet today comes word that as the Arctic sea ice melts, polar bears are finding less and less food sources and are beginning to cannibalize one another.

This shocking story came from CNN, and I had to pass it along.  In it, is this quote from Kassie Siegel, staff attorney for the Center for Biological Diversity:

“The Arctic sea ice melt is a disaster for the polar bears.  They are dependent on the Arctic sea ice for all of their essential behaviors, and as the ice melts and global warming transforms the Arctic, polar bears are starving, drowning, even resorting to cannibalism because they don’t have access to their usual food sources.”

Several documented incidents of cannibalism have been reported to officials, and experts say the more the ice melts, the more stressful it will become on polar bears and other wildlife who depend on Arctic sea ice for their survival.

The U.S. Department of Interior listed the polar bear as a “threatened” species under the Endangered Species Act last May, an action VP candidate, Alaska’s Governor Sarah Palin denouced.

U.S. Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne put it this way:

“Loss of sea ice threatens and will likely continue to threaten polar bear habitat. This loss of habitat puts polar bears at risk of becoming endangered in the foreseeable future, the standard established by the ESA for designating a threatened species.”

Scientists, according to the article, predict that within five years, the Arctic may be free of sea ice.  Where will the polar bears be, Sarah?

My home state is Illinois, and my hometown a little railroad/farming community named Galesburg. We lived on a small farm during my high school years and I became very aware of nature and it's wonders. I loved the out of doors, working with animals, plowing fields and harvesting crops. Those were very good years. After a stint in the Army during the Korean war my broadcasting career took off at the local radio station, a 250 watt "teapot" as it was called in those days. My first job was as an engineer, then the ham came out and I became an announcer/newsman, graduating after several years to a larger market and a stint as a TV journalist/photographer. Cold, wet weather led me to the southwest where I've lived for most of the last 40 years, with a couple of years out to have fun working as a private investigator in San Francisco, and a few years working in Las Vegas hotels and casinos. In all, its been a real ride. After retiring a few years back I became fascinated with the efforts being made to find alternative energy sources. I've watched our environment deteriorate during my lifetime, and now it's my chance to join the chorus of intelligent and caring individuals making a difference one day at a time.

  1. [...] indeed fallen upon polar bears: these beautiful, majestic creatures are being forced to resort to cannibalism, a disturbing fact for a species that normally does not feast on its own [...]

  2. jacory says:

why? why is fred wrong? and what makes this story right? are you really so blind to see that they gave NO credible evidence to back up the story? the gave NO actual links between icemelting and polar bears behavior. they gave ONE example of a polar bear attacking another, but gave NO information linking it to the story. because something was written on cnn it has to be true? even if it gives no credible evidence? they even stated we’ve only been paying attention to the amounts of ice for the past 50yrs. what was it at 50yrs before that? 600yrs before that? we DON’T KNOW. so, we have no real basis to try to say that it is all melting.
here is the number one credible thing to burn into your memories. the article stated, “Some scientists believe that in just five years, the Arctic may be ice-free during the summer.” remember this. so that in 5yrs, when it is nowhere near true, maybe then you will stop being sheep and believing every stupid story printed and every doomsayer prophet with no credible evidence.

  3. Tim Worthers says:

yea fred i dont know where you get your info but its is very wrong the polar bears are dieing and we need to help them GO OBAMA BIDEN!!!

  4. This is worth spreading. Palin, once again, has no clue

  5. Fred says:

Sorry guys but Palin is correct on this one. CNN is full of B.S. as is the rest of the AGW religion. The Polar Bears are doing fine as is the sea ice.

  6. kris says:

i am with u Sarah. Palin was ignored today by the press and it was a much better day listening to the news

  7. Susan says:

As an Alaska resident, I have to say that Palin could care less about our environment and endangered species. The polars are losing this battle and she wants to take them off the endangered species list so that the oil companies (where her husband is employed[?]) can drill and destroy the remainder of the species. GO OBAMA!!!

  8. I am afraid Gov. Palin knows as much about polar bears as she does about foreign policy. Go Obama-Biden!
