This post has been republished from our partners CREDO mobile.

CREDO Mobile is America’s only progressive phone company and supports progressive causes voted on by their members (counted among their members is our sales manager and Publisher). Each month CREDO offers their members a chance to round up their monthly payment by a few cents or more, and those funds get funneled into donations for select organizations. On August 30th, 2016, Kristi Chester Vance, deputy director of Stand.earth, and Ross Hammond, Stand.earth’s director of U.S. campaigns, visited the CREDO San Francisco office to pick up their monthly donation of$40,393!

CREDO and Stand.earth have been working together for years. At the CREDO office, Chester Vance said, “It’s been more than 10 years that we’ve partnered with [CREDO] and more than a quarter of a million dollars, and that money has been critical for us.” She went on to say, “We are really interested in fighting the fights that make a difference and have an impact, and sometimes those fights are esoteric, and money from supporters like CREDO gives us the chance as experts in the field to say, ‘That’s the fight that matters.’”

Founded in 2000 as ForestEthics, Stand.earth has been at the forefront of some of the most important environmental fights of the past 15 years, taking on the logging companies and pipelines that are wreaking havoc not only on our forests but our environment as a whole.

During the event, Hammond spoke about Stand.earth’s recent Starbucks campaign, which CREDO activists are helping to fund. “Starbucks serves over 8,000 cups every minute of every day of every year—over 4 billion cups a year,” said Hammond. “As forest protectors and paper nerds, this is a target we can’t resist.”

Hammond went on to point out that “those 4 billion cups a year equate to over a million trees per year destroyed by Starbucks. And they are destroyed because those cups are not recyclable, even though most Starbucks customers believe that they are recyclable.

Stand.earth’s campaign is to convince Starbucks to recommit to promises it made eight years ago to develop a recyclable cup and increase the use of reusable mugs.”
