Today’s the official International Day of Happiness, say the Angry Birds. Around the world on March 20 every year, the International Day of Happiness acknowledges that happiness and well-being are universal goals and aspirations in the lives of all people. It thus underlines the importance of recognizing these goals in public policy throughout the world.

On Friday at United Nations headquarters in New York, the UN announced a related global campaign with the cartoon and gaming favorites “Angry Birds” to energize youth to step up actions to address climate change. The goal: ensure a sustainable and happier future for all. The campaign reaches out to this age group because it has shown great interest in climate change developments in the past and has the largest stake in mitigation and adaptation.

"RedSecretary-General Ban Ki-moon chose Red of the Angry Birds to make a direct link between tackling climate change and people’s happiness. He appointed Red as an Honorary Ambassador for Green. As of July 2015, the Angry Birds’ games were the most downloaded freemium game series of all time (three billion times collectively). The idea of the UN campaign is to cheer up the Angry Birds on the International Day of Happiness. Said Mr. Ban:

“The Angry Birds have entertained millions of people around the world – and now they are part of making the world a better place…. We are proud to give Red a reason to go Green. There is no better way to mark the International Day of Happiness than to have our animated ambassador raise awareness about the importance of addressing climate change to create a safer, more sustainable and happier future for all.”

Sony Pictures Entertainment has partnered with the UN Development Programme and UN Foundation in the Angry Birds campaign. They ask the general public—especially young people—across the world to take actions on climate change and then share their photos and commitments under hashtag #AngryBirdsHappyPlanet on social media platforms.

The voice actors from the upcoming Angry Birds movie—Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, and Maya Rudolph—and the producers gave hundreds of students gathered in the UN’s General Assembly Hall on Friday a sneak preview of the #AngryBirdsHappyPlanet campaign materials and public service announcements.

Red goes on a “virtual world tour” tomorrow (March 21). He’ll highlight the ways everyone can take climate action—for example, by recycling, using public transportation, and conserving water. Red’s voyage will end on April 22 in New York, where world leaders at UN Headquarters will sign the Paris Agreement, forged last December to limit global temperature rise to well below 2 degrees Celsius.
