To catch readers up, I&#8217;m doing a short series on the top 50 solar energy stories of 2013 so far. Learning from the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/planetsave.com\/2013\/05\/27\/top-30-electric-vehicle-stories-of-2013-so-far\/\" target=\"_blank\">Top 33 EV Stories<\/a>\u00a0article I recently published, I&#8217;m splitting this one into 5 posts. The report notes that even with some uncertainty present about the future state of photovoltaics in the European and Chinese markets, that global installed capacity will almost definitely hit the 100 gigawatt (GW) milestone within the year. In fact, it likely already has, probably sometime within the first quarter. Within just 9 months of the implementation of its solar feed-in tariffs, <a href=\"http:\/\/cleantechnica.com\/2013\/03\/18\/1119-mw-of-solar-added-in-japan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Japan added over one gigawatt (1,000 megawatts) of solar power capacity<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cleantechnica.com\/2013\/01\/16\/china-targeting-10-gw-of-new-solar-capacity-in-2013\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">China is targeting 10 gigawatts of new solar power capacity in 2013<\/a>. In early January, it <a href=\"http:\/\/cleantechnica.com\/2013\/01\/06\/china-renews-subsidy-for-rooftop-solar-projects-according-to-china-daily\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">approved rooftop solar incentives<\/a> for its residents.<\/p>\n<h2>13. However, many people cannot. Have a roof covered by trees? Rent your home? Live in an apartment building? You know what I\u2019m talking about.\u00a0California is no exemption to this problem, and with its strong and successful California Solar Initiative (CSI) sunsetting, renewable energy leaders in the state have been looking to jump to the next step of the solar revolution by making solar power (and wind power) a possibility for people in homes like those mentioned above. The effort to offer such an option is running under the name \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sharedrenewables.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Shared Renewables<\/a>.\u201d A couple of bills aimed at advancing this concept &#8212; <a href=\"http:\/\/cleantechnica.com\/2013\/04\/01\/shared-renewables-could-supercharge-californias-clean-energy-economy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SB 43 and AB 1014<\/a> &#8212;\u00a0are <a href=\"http:\/\/solarlove.org\/california-shared-renewables-bills-move-forward\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">moving through\u00a0California\u2019s legislative process<\/a>. The website for the campaign was <a href=\"http:\/\/cleantechnica.com\/2013\/03\/30\/shared-renewables-website-lanuched\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">launched in March<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>14. <a href=\"http:\/\/solarlove.org\/39-of-ev-owners-have-solar-17-more-planning-it-within-1-year-in-california-infographic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">39% Of California Electric Vehicle Owners Have Solar Power Systems<\/a><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/solarlove.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/california-ev-driver-survey-results.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-362\" alt=\"california ev driver survey results\" src=\"http:\/\/solarlove.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/california-ev-driver-survey-results.jpg\" width=\"526\" height=\"1361\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A recent survey by the\u00a0California Center for Sustainable Energy (CCSE)\u00a0found that 39% of plug-in electric vehicle owners in California owned solar panel systems, and another 17% were planning to go solar within the next year. Yet, they are not widely used in the U.S. However, the\u00a0Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) recently <a href=\"http:\/\/cleantechnica.com\/2013\/05\/11\/la-solar-clean-la-infomercial\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">implemented a feed-in tariff (FiT) for solar power<\/a>, and it has already spurred a good bit of solar demand.<\/p>\n<h2>16. <a href=\"http:\/\/solarlove.org\/shell-bullish-on-solar-despite-dropping-solar-but-much-more-in-its-new-scenarios-than-that\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Shells Forecasts Solar As #1 Source Of Energy Within Decades<\/a><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_451\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-451\" style=\"width: 468px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/solarlove.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/solar-shell.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-451\" alt=\"Source: Shell\" src=\"http:\/\/solarlove.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/solar-shell.png\" width=\"468\" height=\"588\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-451\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: Shell<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In one of the two future energy scenarios Shell released this year (the New Lens Scenarios), the company projected that solar would become the largest source of energy by 2070. We think it&#8217;s a good one.<\/p>\n<h2>18. <a href=\"http:\/\/solarlove.org\/comparison-solar-shopping-energysage-launches-expedia-for-solar-power\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EnergySage Launches &#8220;Expedia Of Solar Power&#8221; &#8212; Comparison Solar Shopping Website<\/a><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_358\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-358\" style=\"width: 670px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/solarlove.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/energysage.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-358\" alt=\"Screenshot of EnergySage website.\" src=\"http:\/\/solarlove.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/energysage-800x297.png\" width=\"670\" height=\"248\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-358\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Screenshot of EnergySage website.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Making shopping for solar easier, and making solar installation bids more competitive, will go a long way towards increasing solar power growth in the US and bringing down prices (in particular, some of the &#8220;soft costs&#8221; of going solar). EnergySage, which\u00a0won a $500,000 SunShot Initiative grant from the US Department of Energy in 2012, in February launched a solar power comparison shopping site aimed at doing just that. We think it has a lot of promise.<\/p>\n<h2>19. <a href=\"http:\/\/solarlove.org\/1bog-launches-expedia-orbitz-kayak-of-solar-power\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1BOG Tweaks Its Model To Launch &#8220;Kayak Of Solar Power&#8221;<\/a><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/solarlove.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/1bog.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1345\" alt=\"1bog\" src=\"http:\/\/solarlove.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/1bog.png\" width=\"487\" height=\"543\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>OK, you can switch the analogies and make 1BOG the Expedia of solar power and EnergySage the Kayak of solar power (or my favorite, Orbitz) &#8212; it doesn&#8217;t really matter, since the point is that both companies are now offering a solar power comparison shopping experience that should help bring down the costs of going solar while also making it easier for customers to navigate the whole process. Notably, for now, the two companies operate in different regions. However, I think they will soon start overlapping, and perhaps collaborating?<\/p>\n<h2>20. <a href=\"http:\/\/solarlove.org\/better-roi-for-low-income-families-that-go-solar-in-belgium\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Belgium Policy A First: Better ROI For Low-Income Families Who Go Solar<\/a><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/solarlove.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/qualiwatt.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-837\" alt=\"qualiwatt\" src=\"http:\/\/solarlove.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/qualiwatt.png\" width=\"760\" height=\"239\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Something you hear over and over again is that solar power is primarily for the wealthy. While it is actually increasingly for the middle class, thanks to falling solar power costs, there\u2019s no avoiding the fact that it is substantially harder for low-income families to go solar. However, a region of Belgium has decided to change that.\u00a0Wallonia, \u201cthe predominantly French-speaking southern region of Belgium\u201d (according to our friend\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wallonia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wikipedia<\/a>), has set up a solar support mechanism (called Qualiwatt) that provides a higher\/faster return on investment (ROI) for low-income households than for middle- or high-income households\u2026 not that the middle- or high-income households get a poor ROI. (By the way, Belgium is currently getting <a href=\"http:\/\/cleantechnica.com\/2013\/02\/20\/14-of-household-electricity-consumption-from-solar-in-belgium-3-of-total-power-consumption\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">14% of household electricity consumption from solar power<\/a>.)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We&#8217;re trying to get more solar energy stories going here on\u00a0Planetsave.
