{"id":33938,"date":"2012-12-12T21:00:25","date_gmt":"2012-12-13T02:00:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/planetsave.com\/?p=33938"},"modified":"2012-12-12T21:00:25","modified_gmt":"2012-12-13T02:00:25","slug":"big-tsunami-changed-caribbean-ecosystem-3300-years-ago","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/planetsave.com\/articles\/big-tsunami-changed-caribbean-ecosystem-3300-years-ago\/","title":{"rendered":"Big Tsunami Changed Caribbean Ecosystem 3,300 Years Ago"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nA new analysis of sediments from the island of Bonaire in the Caribbean makes a convincing case for a tsunami dating back 3,300 years, one that had a massive impact on the island&#8217;s ecosystem.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_33942\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33942\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/planetsave.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/4732152242_8edfafb9ca.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-33942\" title=\"Bonaire Tsunami Changed Ecosystem\" src=\"http:\/\/planetsave.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/4732152242_8edfafb9ca.jpg\" alt=\"Bonaire Tsunami Changed Ecosystem\" width=\"500\" height=\"376\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-33942\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bonaire Coastline<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Scientists studied sediments that suggested the tsunami had entirely changed the coastal ecosystem and sedimentation patterns in the area.<\/p>\n<p>The research, published by\u00a0Dr. Max Engel and colleagues, from the University of K\u00f6ln in Germany in the journal\u00a0Naturwissenschaften &#8211; The Science of Nature, found the evidence in a coastal lagoon.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Documented history has only gone back 500 years, but the overwash deposits from the coastal lagoon provide evidence for this large tsunami 3,300 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Engel and his colleagues studied sediment cores from\u00a0Washington-Slagbaai National Park and looked specifically at grain size distribution,\u00a0\u00a0carbonate content, organic matter, magnetic susceptibility and fauna.<\/p>\n<p>Their conclusion was that these sediments had criteria normally linked with tsunami deposits.<\/p>\n<p>The authors conclude: &#8220;This single catastrophic event is of long-term ecological significance. Formation of a barrier of coral rubble was triggered by the tsunami separating a former inland bay from the open sea and turning it into a highly saline lagoon which persists until today.
