{"id":25833,"date":"2011-10-25T21:00:25","date_gmt":"2011-10-26T01:00:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/planetsave.com\/?p=25833"},"modified":"2011-10-25T21:00:25","modified_gmt":"2011-10-26T01:00:25","slug":"great-wall-collapsing-due-to-climate-change-human-activity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/planetsave.com\/articles\/great-wall-collapsing-due-to-climate-change-human-activity\/","title":{"rendered":"Great Wall Collapsing due to Climate Change &amp; Human Activity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/planetsave.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/great-wall-of-china.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-25876\" title=\"great wall of china\" src=\"http:\/\/planetsave.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/great-wall-of-china.jpg\" alt=\"great wall of china collapsing\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Increasing <a href=\"http:\/\/planetsave.com\/category\/climate-change-2\/\">climate change due to global warming and human activity<\/a> is having a toll on some of earth\u2019s greatest architectural monuments. <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Great_Wall_of_China\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Great Wall of China<\/a>, which has stood for more than two millennia, has recently experienced the collapse of two chunks of its structure: one due to climate changes causing erosions of the land surrounding the wall and the other caused by mining taking place in nearby areas.<\/p>\n<p>The Great Wall, rumored to be visible from space, at one point spanned 3,900 miles across various Chinese dynasties and is an historical landmark. Now <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.environmentalgraffiti.com\/sciencetech\/extreme-weather-destroys-great-wall-of-china\/241\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chinese scholars estimate the wall only spans roughly about 1,500 miles long<\/a><\/span>, less than half of what it used to be.<\/p>\n<p>Although the Great Wall was never one continuous piece, the sections built during different dynasty eras represent a sense of culture and of history, which keeps the people of China connected with the past. Different building methods were used during different dynasties, truly making the wall unique from a cultural perspective as well as for archeological study. However, if things continue the way they have been, the wall might not be standing for very much longer.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Extreme weather conditions have caused approximately 25 miles of a section of the wall built during the Han dynasty to erode during recent years. <a href=\"http:\/\/planetsave.com\/2011\/05\/06\/insane-dust-stormssand-storm-videos-holy-cow\/\">Sandstorms<\/a> have caused the bricks of packed earth to wear down, and, over time, \u201calso cracked the wall and caused it to collapse or break down,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.environmentalgraffiti.com\/sciencetech\/extreme-weather-destroys-great-wall-of-china\/241\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">archeologist Zhou Shengrui says<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Another section of the wall, which was considered the <a href=\"http:\/\/news.xinhuanet.com\/english2010\/china\/2011-10\/19\/c_131200476.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201ccrust of the cream\u201d of the Ming dynasty<\/a>, has suffered a 700-meter (or 2,300 feet) loss because of a network of underground mines in a secluded area of the Hebei province. Although the mines are not located directly beneath the wall, the nearby hollowed chambers beneath the earth are <a href=\"http:\/\/travel.aol.co.uk\/2011\/10\/21\/the-iconic-great-wall-of-china-is-collapsing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">affecting the structure\u2019s stability<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The section of the wall that has collapsed (located roughly 120 miles from Beijing) was built between 1369 and 1644. Nearly 300 years of gradual construction gone.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/World_Heritage_Site\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">World Heritage Site<\/a> that was initially built to protect China from Mongolian invaders, the Great Wall is further proof that nothing lasts forever, especially if we\u2019re not openly aware to the harm we are causing the planet.<\/p>\n<p>Since the miners are not doing anything illegal (they have legal permits to be mining in the area), there is not much one can do about the situation. For the segments of the Great Wall that are <a href=\"http:\/\/planetsave.com\/2010\/11\/15\/conserving-and-rebuilding-soils\/\">eroding<\/a> because of \u201cnatural\u201d forces, conservationists have been <a href=\"http:\/\/houseandgardendiy.com\/2011\/09\/take-action-now-for-a-perfect-spring-garden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">planting vegetation<\/a> in an attempt to avoid additional erosion.
