Here’s Chris’ intro:<\/p>\n

Washington, D.C.\u2014In a move that came as a shock both in this city and throughout the planet on which it is located, Standard & Poor\u2019s late Monday downgraded Earth from its unique HHH rating\u2014the only one in the galaxy\u2014to HH+.<\/p>\n

The coveted HHH rating\u2014meaning, \u201cextremely habitable\u201d\u2014has become indefensible, the ratings agency said, due to continuing failures to balance the atmospheric carbon budget and an increasingly toxic political debate that renders better policies unlikely any time soon.<\/p>\n

\u201cAtmospheric carbon inputs continue to outweigh carbon outputs (or sinks), leading to a growing and unsustainable carbon \u2018surplus,\u2019\u201d wrote S&P. \u201cUnlike fiscal surpluses, this surplus is very dangerous and is already triggering rising temperatures, heat waves, droughts, and extreme weather patterns.\u201d<\/p>\n

Under the new HH+ rating, the Earth is still considered \u201chighly habitable\u201d for humans. However, S&P also changed the planet\u2019s outlook to \u201cnegative,\u201d suggesting the possibility of further downgrades.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
