They dumped billions upon billions of of gallons of toxic waste into Ecuador&#8217;s Amazon, causing cancer and death to a number of Ecuadorians. Yet, the companies would not admit this for decades,.. well, they have never admitted it, despite strong scientific evidence. In a recent trial, Chevron claimed that it hadn&#8217;t harmed a single soul and the company has even tried turning the tables and suing the totally abused local people of Ecuador (see link above).<\/p>\n<div class=\"ast-oembed-container \" style=\"height: 100%;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/duFXuRnd2CU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>However, justice has now been served (sort of). An Ecuadorian court has found, after this 18-year struggle to get Chevron to compensate the country for its crimes, that the Indigenous and rural Ecuadoreans suing Chevron were right.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/planetsave.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/chevron-toxic-oil-ecuador.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16585\" title=\"chevron toxic oil ecuador\" src=\"http:\/\/planetsave.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/chevron-toxic-oil-ecuador.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"332\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In a historic ruling, the court in Lago Agrio, Ecuador found Chevron guilty and ordered the company to pay $8 billion to clean up its oily mess,&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/act.ran.org\/p\/dia\/action\/public\/?action_KEY=3347&amp;First_Name=Zachary&amp;Last_Name=Shahan&amp;Zip=34234&amp;Email=zachary.shahan@gmail.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rainforest Action Network (RAN) reports<\/a>. &#8220;Chevron of course immediately fired off a statement claiming that the judgment was fraudulent and the company would appeal the decision.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Yes, they want to carry this case on even further.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Enough is enough. Some 30,000 Ecuadoreans remain at risk while Chevron tries every legal maneuver and dirty trick it can find,&#8221; RAN writes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<strong>Write to CEO John Watson and tell him it&#8217;s time for Chevron to take responsibility for its oil pollution in the Ecuadorean Amazon.<\/strong>&#8221;\u00a0You can easily do so <a href=\"http:\/\/act.ran.org\/p\/dia\/action\/public\/?action_KEY=3347&amp;First_Name=Zachary&amp;Last_Name=Shahan&amp;Zip=34234&amp;Email=zachary.shahan@gmail.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">on RAN&#8217;s site<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>The Court Victory in Ecuador<\/h3>\n<p>The Ecuadorian court found Chevron &#8220;guilty of polluting the Amazon with over 18 billion gallons of toxic oil waste,&#8221; Mike Gaworecki,\u00a0an online campaigner for RAN and Change Chevron, wrote to me yesterday. &#8220;Chevron has been ordered to pay $8 billion to clean up its oil contamination and restore human rights for the 30,000 affected peoples. This is an unprecedented moment for corporate accountability.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Despite a massive PR and legal campaign, Chevron couldn&#8217;t buy its way past the overwhelming evidence that it has considerably harmed the people of Ecuador.<\/p>\n<p>This is one of the biggest\u00a0judgments\u00a0against an oil company in history.<\/p>\n<h3>Full Statement from Amazon Watch and RAN<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ran.org\/content\/rainforest-action-network-and-amazon-watch-statement-ecuador-court-ruling-against-chevron\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Amazon Watch and RAN<\/a> are two of the organizations that have worked the hardest on this issue. Now the rivers are contaminated, crops don&#39;t grow, and new illnesses and cancer have been introduced.&quot;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16589\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16589\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/planetsave.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/chevron-oil-contamination-rivers-streams-ecuador.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16589\" title=\"chevron oil contamination rivers streams ecuador\" src=\"http:\/\/planetsave.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/chevron-oil-contamination-rivers-streams-ecuador.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16589\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&quot;San Carlos, Ecuador, a community based around petroleum production and suffering one of the highest cancer rates in Ecuador.&quot;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Ongoing Struggles to Get Chevron to Compensate Ecuadorians<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The original compensation request was for $27 billion and even though Chevron got this cut down in the final ruling, it doesn&#8217;t want to acknowledge the legitimacy of the ruling and pay up. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/business\/la-fi-chevron-20110214,0,5432372.story\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chevron<\/a> is calling the case &#8220;illegitimate&#8221; and &#8220;unenforceable in any court that observes the rule of law.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If you look at the Exxon Valdez case, that took 20 years to settle,&#8221; said Allen Good, oil analyst at\u00a0Morningstar\u00a0in Chicago. &#8220;I think there were expectations that the initial judgments would go against Chevron and I think the case is going to play out over a very long time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This ruling is an intermediate step. The appeals could go on for many years,&#8221; said John van Schaik, oil analyst at Medley Global Advisors in New York.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But the fact that the Lago Agrio court ruled in favor of the plaintiffs sends a signal to oil companies that, more than ever, they need to be good corporate citizens&#8230;. The ruling shows that times have changed, and companies need to take environmental concerns seriously.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Tell that to Chevron, which doesn&#8217;t seem to have gotten the point at all!<\/p>\n<h3>Don&#8217;t Let Chevron Waste Any More Time<\/h3>\n<p>In an article on the news, Mike expresses the frustration all of us are feeling as <a href=\"http:\/\/understory.ran.org\/2011\/02\/14\/chevron-is-guilty-ecuadoreans-prevail-in-historic-environmental-lawsuit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chevron continues to try to\u00a0finagle its way out of its legal responsibility<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Enough is enough. The plaintiffs have withstood the impacts of Chevron\u2019s oil pollution on their health and the local environment at the same time that they had to contend with Chevron\u2019s bullying and abusive legal tactics. For nearly two decades, they\u2019ve been living with Chevron\u2019s attempts to deny them basic human rights and a clean and healthy environment. It\u2019s time for Chevron to take responsibility for its oily mess.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Over 1,400 Ecuadorians have reportedly died from Chevron&#8217;s abuse and negligence. And, unfortunately, another 30,000 are now at risk. This is not an issue anyone should sit on the fence about.
