Current Extremism and it's Toll on the Environment
A few weeks ago we were sorely reminded of the extremism of the majority of the current Republican candidates. Among many other alarming things said, Republicans suggested eliminating or privatizing: FEMA, NASA, the EPA, the Federal Labor Relations Board, Medicaid and food stamps. Herman Cain promised not to appoint any Muslims who want to kill Americans to his cabinet. Michele Bachmann supports states’ rights on gay marriage, but also supports a constitutional amendment outlawing it. Rick Santorum wants to “a system of discipline” to “punish” gay soldiers, which suggests that his problem with pornographic Google results is not likely to abate. Tim Pawlenty views Iraq as “one of the shiniest examples of success in the Middle East.”
Obama Reverses Course on Smog Rule
In a surprise move on Friday, President Obama ordered the EPA to withdraw its proposed regulation to tighten ground level ozone standards. Seen as yet another retreat from the president, the decision brought claims of victory from his GOP and industry rivals, and quick rebuke from his supporters and environmental watchdog groups.
Cities with Worst Air Pollution (Top 10 List)
The American Lung Association (ALA) recently released State of the Air 2011, its annual report on air pollution and which cities have got the worst. In total, 18.5 million Americans live in regions with unhealthy levels of year-round particle pollution.
According to the ALA, 13,000 Americans a year are killed from particle pollution from power plants alone.
And for people in “at-risk” groups, like people who already have asthma, chronic lung disease, cardiovascular disease, or diabetes, the hazards of such pollution are even greater.
Looming Issues with EPA Budget Cuts
As budget cuts continue to be imposed by the House GOP on the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), we are faced with an ever growing reality of lacking environmental regulations and restrictions, and an expanding health risk for our country. With the recent federal budget agreement, the GOP has been aiming to cut down on the EPA’s budget, as well as their influence, and has done so with a moderate amount of success.
