Uruguay Builds Clean Electricity Footprint

Originally published on CleanTechnica. For those wanting to understand what a clean electricity footprint looks like, go to Uruguay. In less than 10 years, the country has shrunk its carbon footprint while lowering electricity costs, without calling on the government for renewable energy subsidies. In fact, this country now obtains nearly 95% of its electricity from clean […]

EU Must Go Beyond Carbon Pricing — For Economy, Climate, EU

WWF has released a briefing paper on post-2020 renewable energy targets. The EU has had some of the most aggressive renewable energy and energy efficiency policies and programs for over two decades now. However, its fuel imports have still risen considerably. Already-established renewable energy and energy efficiency leadership will help the EU to curtail that

1,000 Killed, Philippines Get Nailed with Killer Floods — Predicted by Climate Scientists (but "Too Alarmist")

Philippines is now suffering tremendous flooding most likely related to climate change — nice Christmas present, eh? The only way global warming deniers (or, “science deniers,” as I think I’m going to start calling them) can claim that the effects of global warming aren’t already hitting us is if they can prove that climate

APP is Clearing Tropical Forests Designated as Tiger Sanctuaries, Despite What It Says

A recent report exposed that Asia Pulp & Paper (APP) was greenwashing its clear cutting of tropical forests that act as tiger sanctuaries. It denied that was the case, but more evidence has popped up. “A document released today by WWF and partners confirms that a supplier to paper giant Asia Pulp and Paper

The Beautiful Forest (Beautiful, Awe-Inspiring Video)

I shared a great, awe-inspiring short film by WWF UK a couple weeks ago titled Astonish Me. Definitely worth a watch.

A WWF UK representative followed up with another great video/short film the organization recently created. I think this one will change the way you look at a forest forever. It’s a beautiful time-lapse video of a growing forest supplemented with great commentary on forests. Check it out:

Rhino Horn = Medicine? NO! (New Campaign to Bust the Myth)

A former fellow writer on EcoWorldly.com (which is now EcoLocalizer), Rhishja Larson is the leading rhino expert I’ve ever run across. She knows rhinos! And, unfortunately, that means she knows more about the current rhino crisis than most.

Now, she and Saving Rhinos LLC have started a new campaign to bring critical rhino information and rhino crisis awareness to more people: Bust the Myth – Save the Species.

Over 600 New Species Found in Madagascar During Past Decade

As far as biodiversity ‘hot spots’ go, it’s hard to beat Madagascar, a medium sized island off the southeast coast of Africa. According to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), from 1999 to 2010 some 615 new species have been discovered on the subtropical island. That list of new species is comprised of 42 invertebrates, 61 reptiles, 69 amphibians, 17 fish, 385 plants, and 41 mammals. Biologists believe that the island nation’s quite ancient, geologic isolation from the mainland of Africa and the more recent separation from the Indian section of the crustal plate (about 80 mya) set the stage for its uniquely evolved biodiversity.

Russia Helps to Protect Critically Endangered Western Grey Whales (Sort of)

Well, Russia is one key actor threating grey whales with extinction, but it has also taken a step forward in protecting the critically endangered species. “Companies seeking oil extraction rights to a newly available concession off Russia’s Sakhalin Island will not be permitted to conduct activities while Western gray whales are present,” WWF wrote last week.

Cerrado, Truly Precious Ecosystem, Under Threat {Take Action}

Ever heard of the Cerrado? I can’t get on you if haven’t, since I hadn’t until a week or two ago myself. But this truly precious ecosystem is home to approximately 5% of the world’s species, and (the not good news) it has been cut in half in the last 40 years (an area greater in size than the UK, Germany, Italy and Portugal combined).

Tiger Cubs Caught on Camera by WWF (in Threatened Forest)

These are the cutest little guys (or girls). Have to love that WWF could set up a hidden camera there and get these candid, in-the-wild videos of these Sumatran tiger cubs. Of course, the reason it has to do so is not so uplifting. As is mentioned towards the end of the video, “This forest is under imminent threat of being cleared by the pulp and paper industry, despite being designated a ‘global priority Tiger Conservation Landscape’.”

Rhinos are facing extremely tough times as highly technical and interconnected poachers have increased their slaughter rates and have been taking down nearly one a day lately in South Africa.
