The National Basketball Association this week launched NBA Green Week — a comprehensive week of action taken by the league to promote environmental stewardship. The NBA is the only major professional sports league in the world to dedicate an entire week to educating tens of millions of fans about the importance of protecting the planet. A

Fracking and the Natural Gas "Boom" — No National Standards, Secrecy, and Carcinogens

The President of the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), Francis Beinecke, recently visited areas in western Pennsylvania where ‘fracking’ operations are occurring, and spoke with local residents about the impacts of these projects in their communities. My cousin — a medical professional without any affiliation with environmental organizations like Ms. Beinecke’s — also spent

Keystone XL & Jobs

One of the big arguments for the Keystone XL pipeline, which will now be approved no earlier than 2013, if at all, is that it will create a lot of U.S. jobs. Well, to put the matter bluntly, that is horse s***. The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) recently compiled a handful of points

Canada's 'Spirit Bears' Threatened by Proposed Oil Pipeline

The battle of domestic energy production verses the protection of natural resources and wildlife “treasures” has many fronts. With attention largely focused on the environmental and climate change impacts of the Keystone XL pipeline, passing almost under the radar is another proposed pipeline — the Northern Gateway pipeline (proposed by energy giant Enbridge*) — that

Sound hard to believe? Yeah, that’s because it’s not true. Anyway, NRDC’s David Goldstein, Sierra Martinez, and Robin Roy delved into this topic in more depth recently and I’m reposting a great article by David Goldstein on their new report below.

Letter to Obama: Clean Air Act Must be Defended

The Clean Air Act is getting attacked by leading polluters and some members of Congress. Over a couple dozen scientific, environmental, and progressive organizations told Obama in a letter sent to him on Friday that he needs to make sure to stand up for this critical piece of U.S. legislation. Here’s the letter: Dear Mr.
