Taken aboard the International Space Station, this beautiful photo shows the boot of Italy lit up at night, outlining what would otherwise have been indistinguishable from the black sea around it.
These two photos – one false-colour the second natural-colour – are some of the first detailed pictures of the erupting vent and lava flows from the Nabro Volcano, located along the border between Eritrea and Ethiopia.

New evidence provided by researchers flying over East Antarctica’s Gamburtsev Mountain’s between November 2008 to January 2009 has shown that there is ice forming at the bottom of the massive ice sheets that cover Antarctica, as well as on the top.
“Lots of people think of the Arctic as just a flat expanse of white. This couldn’t be further from the truth. There are all sorts of cracks (leads) and mountains (ridges), similar to tectonic plates. The ice below is constantly moving via the winds and currents, and those forces acting on each piece of ice makes for a very dramatic seascape”
The end of March traditionally brings with it dry weather to Thailand, but this year a powerful storm has settled over the Malay Peninsula and brought with it up to up to 1,270 millimeters (50 inches) of rain in little over a week. As a result, the rain has caused landslides and flooded 8 provinces , killed 13 and left 842,324 people affected as of April 1, according to the Thailand government.
NASA has been providing a lot of photos and satellite imagery of Japan over the past week, focusing on the devastation that has affected the region surrounding the Sendai region after the magnitude-9 earthquake and subsequent tsunami that hit. Below are three more images that each show a different picture of the impact the earthquake and tsunami had on the country.
Following the devastating earthquake which struck Japan and the resulting tsunami, flood waters have submerged crop lands and settlements along the affected east coast.
2011 is the first year since NASA’s Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) sensor, which launched on NASA’s Terra satellite in late 1999, has seen the tip of Hut Point Peninsula in McMurdo Sound, free of sea ice. The images below show the same location in 2003, 2006, 2008 and 2011.
