Cars are one of the top top contributors to global warming pollution and other pollution in the world, and especially in the U.S. As I’ve written on here repeatedly, one of the best ways to help the environment is to get out of your car (or sell it) and use your two feet, bike, or transit for transportation more. University of Guelph scientists have created a transgenic pig — the Enviropig — which better digests phosphorus compounds. This development came in response to concerns of negative environmental impacts from animal manure run-off causing algal blooms in waterways, and consequently killing fish and other aquatic creatures.
The National Research Council reports that the use of genetically engineered crops results in less harm to wild life, less soil erosion, and greater cost savings. Its findings could impact agricultural practices in other nations.
