Ontario Now Accepting Micro-FiT Incentive Applications

Applications to the 2016 micro-FiT program in Ontario are now being accepted.

As reported by pv-magazine, the Canadian province of Ontario would launch version 4.0 of its micro-FiT program, even though installation levels are significantly lower than those last year.

Ontario’s electricity authority announced that it would re-open its feed-in tariff program for solar PV systems smaller than 10 kW. The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) suspended the program in April, citing issues with applications, and originally planned to re-open a new version of the program in July.

IESO explains the microFiT program as follows:

“The microFIT Program was launched in 2009 as part of the Ontario government’s efforts to increase renewable energy in the province. The program provides homeowners and other eligible participants with the opportunity to develop a small or “micro” renewable electricity generation project (10 kilowatts (kW) or less in size) on their property.

“Under this program, you will be paid a guaranteed price over a 20-year term (40 years for waterpower projects) for all the electricity you produce and deliver to the province’s electricity grid.”

MicroFIT 4.0 will feature a CA$0.313 (US$0.24) per kilowatt-hour (kWh) feed-in tariff rate for PV systems under 6 kW, as a newly separate class. PV systems 6-10 kW will receive the previous rate of CA$0.294 (US$0.23) per kWh. As an alternative to the feed-in tariff, in-series net metering will be allowed if permitted by the local distribution company.

The IESO announced it began accepting microFIT version 4.0 applications as of 12 p.m. on June 21, 2016.

“Applications will continue to be allocated towards the 50 MW 2016 microFIT procurement target. For information about capacity available under the current procurement target, please view the microFIT bi-weekly reports.

“The 2016 price schedule has been updated to include the new price tranche for solar photovoltaic (PV) rooftop projects that are 6 kW or less.

“Final microFIT version 4.0 rules, contract and supporting documents, are available in the program documents section of the website. The IESO will review applications that are submitted to ensure they are complete, eligible and contain all required information.”
