London Launches 1st Solarbox

When you next visit London, be sure to not only look out for red telephone boxes, but also green ones. A new startup called Solarbox has just launched in the streets of “The Big Smoke.” It turns old telephone boxes into “solarboxes” that offer free solar charging for your phones, tablets, cameras, and so on.

It’s a great idea, imho, and it actually has a business model behind it. The folks at Solarbox are selling advertising on these (hopefully to green businesses). Of course, it will take some time to ramp up. Solarbox just opened its first solarbox this week. Siemens, UnLtd and LSE Entrepreneurship are backing the project for now.

“Solarbox was founded by two graduates of the London School of Economics, Harold Craston and Kirsty Kenney. Harold dreamt up the idea one day while walking home from university, and Kirsty jumped on board one day later,” Sustainnovate writes.

“Solarbox got 2nd place in the Mayor of London’s Low Carbon Entrepreneur of the Year Award.”

Solarbox was founded by two recent London School of Economics graduates. Its CTO is a solar industry veteran from the Netherlands, Baron Derrick van Voorst tot Voorst. (Is that an awesome name or what?)

This is certainly a fun new company. I’ll be keeping a close eye out for news from the Solarbox crew.
