Wind Farms at the Tip of Your Finger: Windfarm Locator App

wind farms locatorLocate and track over 12,000 wind farms around the world, and see how much electricity they are capable of, and currently are, producing with this locator app.

Not that long ago, wind power was somewhat of a fringe energy source, but over the last decade, the business of harvesting clean renewable energy from the wind has grown into a huge industry, as the maturing wind turbine technology has given wind developers consistent, efficient, and reliable platforms to work with.

Certain locations, such as the North Sea, are peppered with large offshore wind farms generating massive amounts of clean energy from the seemingly limitless power of the wind. However, there are quite a few wind farms that aren’t nearly as big as these, but that still harvest wind energy effectively and cost-efficiently, making wind power a viable option in many places around the world.

If you’re a booster of wind energy, a renewable energy advocate or educator, or are in the wind power industry, you might enjoy using a new wind farms locator app, which displays data on over 12,000 wind farms.

The Windfarm Locator app, which is available for both iOS and Android, takes advantage of the huge amount of data about wind power and weather available via the internet to provide details about wind farms around the globe.

The app features a detailed map of installed wind farms, the technical data on the turbines at each one, as well as an estimate of the amount of electricity being supplied to the grid from each one, on an hourly basis.

The database of wind farms in the app is by no means complete, and the developer is encouraging people to contribute to it and improve it by correcting an inaccurate location, or by submitting information or an image of a wind farm that isn’t currently listed. Each month, one of the submitters will be picked to win a handheld anemometer from the developer, Francesco Paraggio.

The Windfarm Locator app is available from the iTunes Appstore or Google Play.

  1. The app looks great. But can I ask, why would one need to find a wind farm excuse my naivety, but I am genuinely curious!

    1. It is difficult to add something to this great post! My opinion as technician working into wind energy is that the app explains to everybody what are those giant wind turbines met while traveling or just in the backyard. Terms are simple and accessible and the content is strong enough at the same time. My advice is to search a wind to visit it! Free your curiosity, enjoy the energy turn we are living and learn more with an app such this one!

  3. One of the app users shared a very unusual view of the London Array Offshore wind farm! It is a shot taken on a Fishing trawler off the Thames estuary! Enjoy!
