Solar FREAKIN’ Roadways! Join the Revolution (VIDEOS)

Imagine the potential! It’s not just for roads — the possibilities with Solar Roadways include your home, it could be all or nearly off grid thanks to your solar patio, walkway, or driveway (which you no longer have to shovel or plow if you live in the north). When you leave home, you could drive on Solar Roadways which are pothole free, snow and ice free, and the LEDs help you see the lines clearly and easily, especially at night when many people suffer from night blindness. Whoa, and that’s just the beginning.

LED lights are embedded in the solar panels and they are beautiful. Picture landing on a lit up runway, or having your next community parade with colours flashing from the “pavement.” When you’re driving at night, the road will light up in front of you, and if a deer or moose steps onto the surface, her footprints will illuminate. You could light the pathway to your front door. This would be very cool in my neighborhood that sports NO street lights, just the light of the moon and stars.

It’s estimated that a nationwide system of recycled-glass-into-solar-roads could produce 3 times more clean, renewable energy than we currently use (solarroadways.com/numbers.shtml).

Solar Roadways reports that the company has received two phases of funding from the U.S. Federal Highway Administration for research and development of a paving system that will pay for itself over its lifespan. We are about to wrap up our Phase II contract (to build a prototype parking lot) and now need to raise funding for production.

  1. Of course, the implications for the greening of our power needs is phenomenal and amounts to a revolution, but I am very interested in the many great additional benefits this invention will bring. Imagine parking lots and roadways that can be changed in an instant, better storm water management, better roadway lighting. It is amazing. Great post. http://harryhelmet.com
