San Francisco Castro District Gets Rainbow Crosswalks

One of the gayest districts in the world has gotten matching crosswalks. The most surprising thing is that it has taken so long for San Francisco’s Castro District to get rainbow crosswalks.

Of course, there’s a whole LGBT thing to cover with regards to this, but that’s not really our beat. I decided to quickly cover this for two reasons:

  1. It’s fun (duh).
  2. Rainbow crosswalks would actually be awesome anywhere, for practical reasons — they’d do a much better job of making oblivious drivers aware of the fact that pedestrians might be present and have the right of way.

That’s my two cents. Feel free to chime in with your own.

(Btw, the new crosswalks are coming as part of an overall street improvement package that includes trees, wider sidewalks, bike racks, and better outdoor lighting.)
