There’s no peace in the land for a man and his dancing raccoon. If you haven’t seen this video of a man dancing with his pet coon to Aretha Franklin, it is rather entertaining. The title is “The Hillbilly Slide And One Mad Coon Starring Your Favorite Coon and Coonrippy!”
The video has generated over one million views so far, and it might have sparked the attention of Tennessee authorities who confiscated the playful animal. The moral of the story seems to be, ‘If you like dancing with your coon to great tunes, don’t videotape and share on YouTube.’
It also may have been a neighbor’s complaint that got the critter taken away. They are not legal, to have as pets in Tennessee, because they can carry rabies and this disease can be fatal to humans. A raccoon carrying rabies can also show no signs they have the disease. This is not to say all raccoons should be feared or that there should be any aggression towards them. The main safety measure is to leave them alone. Raccoons are known for their intelligence and playfulness, so they have an appeal for people who want them as pets.
There are far better pets to have though and many animals in shelters that need to be adopted or they will be euthanized. The problem with online videos that make certain animals look fun, is that they may be giving people the wrong ideas about them. Then it is more likely they too will want one, though they don’t know the dangers. In the end, it seems it is the animals that suffer and are eventually euthanized because they adapt to living near or with humans and can’t survive in the wild any longer. The confiscated coon is reportedly now at a wildlife center.
Would you keep a pet raccoon?
