Bear Steals Dumpster from Restaurant (Video)

The part where the bear stands upright and walks backwards on two paws is striking. The movements look very human. The scene also raises some intriguing questions, such as, does the bear know it is taking something that is owned by someone else? Or at least that it is invading foreign territory for a raid?

The fact the theft takes place at night when no humans are around suggests that it is at least possible there is some awareness within the bear that it is doing something in a secret manner with a specific goal.

However, it this interpretation may be reading too much into the scenario. It is common for people to project human attributes onto animals,  especially if they like them or there is some emotion associated with a particular animal. Obviously, bears are some of the most liked wild animals because of their size, power, and intelligence. They also at least somewhat resemble humans with forward facing eyes, a nose and ears sort of like our own.

Ever heard the phrase, ‘A fed bear is a dead bear’? It has come into use because the practice of feeding wild bears — especially by tourists in parks — has disrupted the natural fear of humans bears have. The consequence is bears coming too close to humans at camp sites or near trash looking for food. When bears learn they can associated people with food the no longer keep a safe distance and may be labelled a nuisance bear. In that case, if they are reported for disturbing or scaring people when they are looking for human food in some cases they are shot and killed by conservation officers or even police. Feeding bears directly or by leaving trash out is likely to cause problems that later may result in the bear being killed.

  1. Bear are not dumb creatures. As a commercial beekeeper I’ve dealt with more than my share. Those who might suggest that bear are just poor dumb animals, not capable of deductive reasoning, have never had to deal with a nuisance bear. Nothing about this video is surprising!!

  3. Well not sure where a restaurant can do better than what they are doing now-what’s an alternative for large commercial places? I don’t know of any.

Regardless, knowing that bears are smart, this guy must be at the top of the bear IQ scale! What creative skills this bear had, instead of rooting thru he clearly had an idea and figured out he could take it to a more desirable place and that he came back! And checked the one that seemed to have cardboard and so quickly and accurately turned the other and moved two away to his favorite picnic site. Yes,I fear for him but that’s the most clever, skilled bear activity I’ve seen! Smarter than the average bear and hopefully he will avoid humans as he clearly did not want to stay where he knew humans were possible to encounter. He could have spent time to see if he detected any humans present-wish we had some before and where he took them!
