Flying with Whooping Cranes to Help Them Migrate & Survive

If you’ve seen the beautiful movie Fly Away Home, this might really bring out some sentimental feelings… and the picture above might remind you of something. But the story here is slightly different.

Operation Migration is an effort to conserve migratory bird species through innovative ways and research. Most notably, perhaps, it has helped to keep Eastern Whooping cranes in existence by flying with them and teaching them a life-saving migratory route.

“Operation Migration has played a leading role in the reintroduction of endangered Whooping cranes into eastern North America since 2001. In the 1940s the species was reduced to just 15 birds,” the organization writes on its website.
