In a story separate (sort of) from the Heartland Institute leak we’ve covered at length here on Planetsave in recent days, it’s been confirmed that a whistleblower, John Mashey (a retired computer scientist), has filed a complaint with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) about Heartland’s non-profit, 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status. Mashey filed the complaint before the leak, apparently, following investigations he has conducted of the Heartland Institute, Fred Singer’s Science and Environmental Policy Project, and Craig Idso’s the Centre for the Study of Carbon Dioxide and Global Change.
Both Idso and Singer receive funding from the Heartland Institute and the three of them work to make it look like there is confusion and debate regarding the cause of global warming today, humans.
“I believe there was a massive abuse of 501c(3),” Mashey told the UK’s Guardian in a phone interview. “My extensive study of these think anks showed numerous specific actions that violated the rules – such as that their work is supposed to be factually based. Such as there was a whole lot of behaviour that sure looked like lobbying and sending money to foreign organisations that are not charities.”
We republished a piece by John Mashey the other day on certain aspects of his investigation. Some pretty shocking stuff. I highly recommend checking that piece out.
On the Science
As mentioned above, the “science” the Heartland Institute and these related organizations peddle is weak, at best, and manipulated or completely incorrect, at worst. “What motivates the Heartland Institute? As climate scientists and health professionals, we view the systematic manipulation and suppression of climate science for private benefit as confusing at best, and inhumane at worst,” a letter from “30 leading health professionals and scientists from the US, Britain, Australia and New Zealand” on Friday noted, according to the Guardian.
“It is in the public, national, and global interest for all funding behind their activities to be revealed. This allows people to make up their own minds about the truth of the climate change threat, so that action can be planned in the light of reality rather than the murky shadows of secretly funded disinformation.”
This is in addition to the open letter by climate scientists that I published here on Planetsave last night, also worth a read (if you want to hear what actual climate scientists have to say about this ongoing effort to hide the inconvenient truth of global warming and its causes).
