Europe Bans Battery-Cage Eggs

News: Keeping chickens in battery cages and selling their eggs is now illegal in Europe. “On the first day of 2012, keeping hens in such cages became illegal, in all 27 countries of the European Union,” the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) reports. “Hens can still be kept in cages, but they must have more space, and the cages must have nest boxes and a scratching post.”

Why this is important: Keeping chickens in battery cages is cruel, downright cruel, and disgusting. More on battery cages and the egg industry from the Humane Society, PETA, and Farm Sanctuary.

Opportunities for action: Team up with any of those organizations above and try to drop the battery cages in the U.S.
