Occupy Wall Street Day of Action — What Really Happened?

The Occupy Wall Street Day of Action yesterday was big news, but news agencies are covering one side of the story — they are primarily reporting on what police told them. Is that it a little biased or am I a cherry pie? Luckily, in the age of the internet, we have citizen journalism in all forms. Reddit is one of my favorite sources for Occupy Wall Street news, and there’s a great post at the top of the Occupy Wall Street subreddit today on what happened from the protesters’ eyes — it included some of the videos and images below.

Here, a cop pulls a woman’s hair and essentially tries to start a huge physical clash between the protesters and armed police:

In the video below, a protester ends up completely bloodied. How’d that happen?

New York Supreme Court Judge was pushed by NYPD after a ridiculous police response to peaceful protester:

I was there to take down the names of people who were arrested… As I’m standing there, some African-American woman goes up to a police officer and says, ‘I need to get in. My daughter’s there. I want to know if she’s OK.’ And he said, ‘Move on, lady.’ And they kept pushing with their sticks, pushing back. And she was crying. And all of a sudden, out of nowhere, he throws her to the ground and starts hitting her in the head,” says Smith. “I walk over, and I say, ‘Look, cuff her if she’s done something, but you don’t need to do that.’ And he said, ‘Lady, do you want to get arrested?’ And I said, ‘Do you see my hat? I’m here as a legal observer.’ He said, ‘You want to get arrested?’ And he pushed me up against the wall.

A former Philadelphia Police Captain was arrested for joining OWS:

Some quotes from reddit:

  1. My 5 year old son’s comment on watching an OWS protestor dragged by hair and arrested: “Why are the cops being so mean to her? She didn’t do anything bad. Are all cops mean like that, mommy?”
  2. American homes destroyed by Al Qaeda last year = 0. | Destroyed by banks = 1,200,000. Who are the real terrorists?
