Uluru and Amadeus Basin From Space (Photo of the Day)

Deep in the heart of Australia’s outback rests a massive rock. Known for a long time as Ayers Rock, but known for an even longer time as Uluru, the sandstone formation stands 348 m (1,142 ft) high, though most of its bulk lies underground.

In this Landsat 5 image taken on the 18th of May, 2011, three of Australia’s greatest natural wonders – including Uluru – can be seen.

Uluru can be seen to the bottom right of the image, while the group of 36 domed rock formaions known as the Kata Tjuta rest pretty much in the bottom centre of the image. The white area at the top is the salt-crusted Lake Amadeus.
