This amazing video shows the Virginia earthquake ripple west across the United States, thanks to an array of detectors that are part of the USArray/EarthScope facility.
The red dots refer to upward motion while the blue dots refer to downward motion.
At first the ripple effect is an obvious wave out from the epicentre and across the country, but then it takes on a less organised pattern and looks very random.
