The Disc of Earth from Space (Photo of the Day)

NASA released this utterly breathtaking image of Earth as seen from space on October 17, 2000. You can clearly see North and South America thanks to the combined efforts two satellites.

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument aboard NASA’s Terra satellite is responsible for the image of the land surface which was captured over 16 days, and NOAA’s Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) provided the image of the clouds.

The image was created using these data by Reto Stöckli, Nazmi El Saleous, and Marit Jentoft-Nilsen, NASA GSFC.
