Southern Africa from Space (Photo of the Day)

This beautiful image shows southern Namibia and northern South Africa on Africa’s lower-west coast thanks to the European Space Agency’s Envisat satellite.

The image, taken on the 4th of July of this year, shows the Namib Desert – considered to be the oldest desert in the world – and the Sperrgebiet diamond mining area in the south. Further south is the Orange River which forms part of the border between South Africa and Namibia before it empties into the Atlantic Ocean at Alexander Bay, easily notable by the lighter green colour in the image.
