Southern American Snow Capped Mountains {Photo of the Day}

The long strain of the Andes dominates this image of South America, still snow-capped and including the Northern Patagonian Ice Field in southern Chile to the bottom left of the image.

Taken by Envisat on the 3rd of June of this year, southern Argentina dominates much of the image. In the centre are two lakes in the countries Chubut region. Lake Musters’ depth of about 20 m gives it a dark hue, while Lake Colhué Huapi fills a shallow depression, about 2 m deep.

To the right of the lakes is the San Jorge Gulf, which measures about 228 kilometres at its mouth.
