Shoemaker Impact Structure Seen From Space {Photo of the Day}

This astronaut photograph shows the Shoemakr (formerly Teague) Impact Structure in Western Australia, a massive impact site approximately 30 kilometers (19 miles) in diameter and easily discernible from the surrounding landscape by concentric ring structures.

The impact event, which took place approximately 1.63 billion years ago, deformed the rocks and left this striking visage on the landscape.

Throughout the impact site are several saline and ephemeral lakes – Nabberu, Teague, Shoemaker, and numerous smaller ponds. The differences in the water colour result from both water depth and sediments.
