The Painted Desert From Space {Photo of the Day}

The Painted Desert in northern Arizona, US, lies between the Grand Canyon and northwest of the Petrified Forest National Park, and is captured here in two beautiful images taken by the Thematic Mapper on the Landsat 5 satellite.

The first image is a natural colour image; essentially, what you would see from space if you looked out a window. The bottom image is made up of colours from the various parts of the light spectrum that we can’t naturally see, and allows for better distinction between types of rock, soil, and vegetation, all the way down to the levels of water in plants.
