Botswana's Okavango Swamp From Space {Photo of the Day}

Today’s photo is another astronaut photograph on June 2, 2011, by the crew of the International Space Station, showing the entire Okavango “delta” in Botswana.

Known in southern Africa as the “Jewel of the Kalahari Desert,” the enormous wetland spr9ings from the Okavango River which only rises in the high-rainfall zone of southern Angola, hundreds of kilometers to the northwest.

The left of the image shows the dark-green forested floodplain, which is about 10 kilmeters (6 miles) wide where it enters the view. The Okavango then proceeds to enter a rift basin which allows the river to spread out and form the wetland shown in the image.
