Alaskan Volcano Novarupta From Space {Photo of the Day}

This image of Novarupta, a volcano located on the Alaska Peninsula in Katmai National Park and Preserve, whose name means “new eruption”, was taken all the way back in 1990 thanks to one of the Landsat satellites.

The 1912 eruption of Novarupta is the largest eruption of the 20th century, releasing 13 to 15 cubic kilometers (3.1 to 3.6 cu mi) of magma, 30 times the volume of magma as the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens. It erupted from June 6 to June 8 to form what we now see as Novarupta.
