Radioactive Material Found in Seawater near Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station

Radioactive materials have been detected in seawater south of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station according to a press release from the Tokyo Electric Power Company. The radioactive materials were found from seawater around the discharge canal, which runs south from the nuclear plant which was damaged by the earthquake on March 11.

TEPCO has informed the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency (NISA) and Fukushima prefecture and will re-sample the water tomorrow morning.

The original survey was enacted as part of a larger monitoring program of surrounding environmental areas following the damage to the power plant.
