How Much is Saving Dick Cheney from a Nigerian Prison Worth to Halliburton?

Last week, I briefly covered an international arrest warrant being issued for former Vice President Dick Cheney from the Nigerian court system. The case is regarding a massive bribery scandal in which Halliburton gave Nigerian officials at least $180 million (and was apparently awarded a $6 billion natural gas pipeline project for it). The charges are coming from Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

Now, there’s word that Halliburton is looking to reach a settlement with the Nigerian government, reportedly providing it with $500 million to keep Cheney out of a Nigerian prison.

“Halliburton is planning to make a plea bargain in former U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney’s corruption case, Nigerian officials told GlobalPost.”

However, it is not clear from Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission if they are going to take Halliburton up on its offer.

“The companies are asking for a plea bargain, we are reviewing their request, we are talking with them, but we have not gone far with the talks yet,” Femi Babafemi, spokesman for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, said.

Cheney and three other top Halliburton executives are being charged on 16 counts and could spend up to 3 years in a Nigerian prison if convicted.
