Barbecuing and Eating Endangered Iguanas Will Get You Arrested

Well, at least if you’re stupid enough to post the photos of you eating it on Facebook.

A couple vacationing in the Bahamas has been arrested after they posted pictures of themselves cooking and eating an iguana. Police said the photos showed the American couple “catching an iguana, parts of an iguana on a grill, two men eating the iguana pieces, and a man and a woman cleaning what appears to be undersized conch.”

The two were arrested on Monday under the Bahamas’ Fisheries Regulations and Wild Animal Protection Act because the iguana species is protected under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Sepcies of Wild Fauna and Flora.

It’s unclear what kind of penalty the couple will face in the Bahamas, but they could also face charges once they return to the United States. Last month, a homeless man was sentenced to 10 days in jail for a similar crim in San Louis Obispo, CA: he caught and ate a protected Central Coast steelhead trout.
