Climate Change Less and Less a Swindle

The Great Global Warming Swindle aired in Britain on the 8th of March, 2007, on Channel 4. The makers suggest that ‘the scare over manmade global warming may prove to be the first great example in the modern Western world, when science was betrayed by scientists themselves’ and that man-made global warming is “a lie” and “the biggest scam of modern times.”

In a somewhat ironic turn of events, the evidence they presented as the real reason the Earth was warming, has been shown to be incorrect.

Now let me disclaimer this article by saying that I have not watched the film. I am basing what I know of the film on Wikipedia, and so let me say this; from what I can tell, this new revelation has only corrected one of their claims.

The original claim made by the producers of the film, was that a decrease in cosmic rays over the last hundred years was the cause for global warming. Through a decrease in cosmic rays a correlative decrease in the production of low clouds would allow more heat from the sun to warm the Earth and cause global warming.

Research published Thursday 3 April in the Institute of Physics’ Environmental Research Letters has shown how a team from Lancaster and Durham Universities attempted to prove the correlation.

The researchers found that the change in Earth’s cloud cover had no relation to the change in cosmic ray intensity. Professors Sloan from Lancaster University and Wolfendale from Durham University write, “No evidence could be found of changes in the low cloud cover from known changes in the cosmic ray ionization rate.”

Previous research had in fact shown a hint of correlation between the two, as a result of data collected by the International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project. This had been the evidence that the makers of the Great Global Warming Swindle had based their attack on.

I’ll leave the humorous attacks against the scientists who backed such an opposition to manmade global warming to others.
