Continual Unfounded, Random and Childish Attacks Keep Coming

childish1.jpgThere is something within many environmentalists that gets them irked off very easily. I know for a fact that I wouldn’t be able to get away with telling you that I’m not easily angered. Most of those who know me would be up in arms, consternation and hysterics. All of that being said, when we are attacked, we should always respond with respect.

That is what I will attempt to do now, in response to John Coleman. I have never heard of the man before now, but the founder of the Weather Channel is a well known figure, and well respected. In my news feeds tonight was a rant entitled “Weather Channel Founder: Global Warming ‘Greatest Scam in History’.”

Joe D’Aleo at Icecap, CCM, in introducing Coleman’s rant, said he was “privileged to work with John Coleman” and described his rant as an “insightful post.”

He could not have been further from the truth.

According to ICECAP’s (International Climate and Environmental Change Assessment Project) about page, they are “portal to all things climate for elected officials and staffers, journalists, scientists, educators and the public.” So I can only assume that they felt indebted to Coleman and allowed the rant to go un-parsed.

Coleman, sadly, represents a raving madman in his “post”, and seemingly feels that colorful description is going to help sell his point. According to his post he is “amazed, appalled and highly offended” with Global Warming, describing it as a “SCAM” (all capitals).

Apparently, “dastardly scientists environmental and political motives” are behind the whole thing, manipulating data and creating elaborate allusions. He describes some of us as of the “whacko type” and informed the world that we all had friends in government backing us up.

The cry of the weak came next, and I could do nothing but shake my head. “Environmental extremists, notable politicians among them, then teamed up with movie, media and other liberal, environmentalist journalists…” is a cry that seems almost out of a McCarthy era movie.

Now I will grant him one point in his rant, and that is the one-sided viewpoint that the American (and no doubt worldwide) media gives global warming. But in a day and age where most media outlets are bankrolled by politically driven egomaniacs, one can only shake their head and hope for a better day, preferably one with Star Trek-esque tones.

He spends one whole paragraph explaining that he is a meteorological expert, of which I have no doubt, and that “…Global Warming is a non-event, a manufactured crisis and a total scam.” He throws one more at us, just for good measure, hoping that the self pity angle might get a better reaction:

“I say this knowing you probably won’t believe a me, a mere TV weatherman, challenging a Nobel Prize, Academy Award and Emmy Award winning former Vice President of United States. So be it.”

It was at this point that I scrolled down my browser screen, expecting a long continuing scientific explanation of why we are all “whacked.” Sadly, I was not so lucky with only two paragraphs left to read. Apparently, we are to take him at his word, presumably because none of us are smart enough to understand the intricacies of meteorological data.

His insistence that he knows he is correct is all he gives us, telling us that there is “…no run away climate change” and that our impact on the climate “…is not catastrophic.”

Now, up until now, he could be excused for just being a little dotty, and we could have left it at that. You wouldn’t have heard from me on this, and we would have all gone on being none the wiser. Unluckily for us all, Coleman included one last paragraph that literally left me sitting in my seat stunned.

This is the sentence, unedited, and purely in context. He says that in the next decade “As the temperature rises, polar ice cap melting, coastal flooding and super storm pattern all fail to occur as predicted everyone will come to realize we have been duped.” He trails off then, but I still cannot really fathom what he is thinking.

If nothing else, is he unaware of what has happened in the Arctic this past summer? I believe that the next sentence may attempt to dissuade people from the importance of the Arctic melt we’ve seen in the Arctic Circle, and in Greenland.

“And, natural cycles and drifts in climate are as much if not more responsible for any climate changes underway.”

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change – which I grant is probably on Coleman’s “whacko” list – have already reported (pdf) temperature rises over the past hundred years. And while we may not be seeing super storm patterns or massive coastal surges due to global warming, both of these seem – according to news headlines – to be only a few years away.

It seems as if the evidence that is right before our eyes – that the temperature has already raised, and that the Arctic is disappearing like a martini at an AA meeting – is just a non issue to Mr. Coleman. Why bother looking at what is actually happening, when one can safely rest in their own beliefs and theories.

I have, and always will be, open to someone providing me with direct proof that we have not caused global warming, and that it is not actually happening. But until then, and until the Arctic Circle goes back to being, you know, ice, then I’m sorry, but the evidence seems overwhelming to me.

Weather Channel Founder: Global Warming ‘Greatest Scam in History’

  1. Shirley – Actually, Coleman was forced out of ‘The Weather Channel’ decades ago… basically, he was involved for about two years in the early 80s when almost nobody had even heard of ‘The Weather Channel’.

Joshua – Given the rest of his statements you should have known better than to take him at his word that he is a ‘meteorological expert’. He isn’t. He is an old school TV weatherman… meaning a reporter with no background in meteorology who just reads the weather report on screen.

  2. I believe this story. I had heard the Weather Channel had been bought by some conservative “whacko” and this must be him. I will never watch the weather channel again. I can only assume that its data will be flawed. Besides, there are many viable choices.
