Natural Gas Fracking DOES Create More Methane in Underground Water

June 29th, 2011 | by Important Media Cross-Post

The drive to replace coal-burning electricity with natural gas continues to run into environmental speed bumps. Research scientists writing for Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America (PNAS) report that while directional drilling and hydraulic-fracturing technologies are dramatically increasing natural-gas extraction, the aquifers overlying the Marcellus and Utica shale formations of northeastern Pennsylvania and upstate New York show systematic evidence of methane contamination of drinking water associated with shale-gas extraction

Methane Will Wreak Havoc in Changing Climate

A two-part study investigating the impact of methane – one of the most potent of greenhouse gases – has found that millions of tonnes of methane currently frozen in sediment beneath the Arctic Ocean will wreak havoc if released into the oceans
