un.gifMy compliments to the distinguished and dedicated efforts of the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and their role in the Nobel Peace Prize. Showing once again that the United Nations is a crucial organization in our day and age.

Since the UN was first created in 1945, they have seen many changes and faced many threats. Like all organizations, it has seen its ups and downs, and we all know the UN has more than a few critics here in the States. From their stealth black op helicopters, to their evil intent on undermining apple pie and mom, they have, with regret, been lampooned from all elements of the American Society.

While the UN has recently increased the size and function of its peacekeeper forces, it is this arena of the UN that I have taken issue with in the past. You see I am not a dove, I believe the current path to a more active role for the United Nations military is needed in the world.

My perceived negative aside, they have always stood out in regards to the humanitarian aspects of their missions. In this writer’s opinion their actions in education, disaster relief, research, and international cooperation among the intellegia have always endeared them to my heart.

No, the United Nations has not cured the problems of the world. In order to do that one would have to cure the problems of every member within our species; utopia does not exist. Here are a few of the accomplishments of the United Nations recently.

Despite a failed policy to actually address the problems of Afghanistan by the U. S. Government, the UN is working hard to make real changes in there. How? The only real means for achieving change anywhere is through education. Thanks to their efforts, Afghanistan now has the highest number of children in school in their nation’s history. It is crucial that the young girls and women of Afghanistan be allowed to obtain an education.

They say there is no future for this nation, no reason to invest in this poor country. It would be nice in this climate changing world to run an experiment in Afghanistan, one that could turn this nation into a model economy. Huh, what am I saying? I propose that Industrial Hemp, be allowed as a cash crop in Afghanistan and that industry be put in place, which can make paper products for export. The country would be in the black in a few years, think of the benefits. Save the forest, grow hemp; that is my new slogan.

The efforts of the UN Foundation, World Health Organization, and the UN Children’s Fund have collectively vaccinated over 372 million children for Measles. In partnership with Nothing But Nets, since 1999 a 75 percent increase in mosquito nets has provided protection to many from malaria. Yes, more needs to be done. This can only be accomplished, however, when member nations live up to their fiscal promises to the United Nations.

You dear readers, I am sure can think of many things that the United Nations does that is worthy of special mention. Now is your time to assist this great humanitarian calling. The United States Department Blog is seeking statements as to whether or not the UN fulfills its mission. Lend them a hand, drop the blog a line and

Tell them YES, the UN fulfills its mission effectively.
