Indian State Of Andhra Pradesh Eyes 25% Renewable Energy Share By 2022

The state of Andhra Pradesh in India has proposed the most ambitious renewable energy target among all states.

The Andhra Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission (APERC) has proposed to increase the share of renewable energy in its electricity mix to 25.25% by March 2022. The commission issued a draft regulation which, if approved, will require the state’s utilities to acquire at least 25.25% of the total electricity procurement from renewable energy sources, excluding hydro power.

Indian regulations call for separate renewable purchase obligations for solar and non-solar technologies. For non-solar renewable energy technologies APERC has proposed a target of 12.50% by March 2022. The commission has also proposed to increase the solar power share from 4.75% in 2017-18 to 12.75% in 2021-22.

The Indian government has increased its national solar power target from earlier 3% by March 2022 to 8%. This increased target is equivalent to the installed solar power capacity target of 100 GW by March 2022.

The Ministry of New & Renewable Energy has stated that Andhra Pradesh is required to have an installed capacity of 9,834 MW by March 2022. However, with the proposed increase in solar RPO target, Andhra Pradesh will have to further increase this installed capacity.
