Chevron Says People in the Amazon Don't Matter

Chevron Corporation, one of the largest oil companies in the world, recently lost a court case in Ecuador and was ordered to pay $18 billion in damages to the approximately 30,000 affected residents of the Amazon.

From 1964 through 1992, Chevron Corporation (under the Texaco brand) drilled and dumped its waste in the Ecuadorian Amazon, resulting in, at the very least, hundreds of people dying, and thousands of others acquiring diseases, illnesses, birth defects, and stillbirths from this.

Since the ruling, Chevron has been fighting to delay and try to overturn the payment requirement from the court judgement. In a recent statement by one of their lawyers, he said “The plaintiffs are really irrelevant. They were always irrelevant.” And this is not the first time the company has insulted the people of Ecuador.
