Coal is a dirty, dirty energy source. If you count it’s harmful effects on our health, it’s probably the most expensive. Even not counting those, though, it is going to be a smaller and smaller part of our energy mix due to its rising costs and renewable energy’s fast-falling costs. Nonetheless, the billion-dollar industry has been doing all it can to make a few billion more before its inevitable demise. One thing it’s done is squash regulations of mercury, arsenic, cyanide, acid gas, and other toxic pollutants for about 21 years!
Good news: that time is presumably over… the Obama administration, and Obama himself, announced new standards for these pollutants yesterday. Here’s more, including a video of Obama, from my post on sister site CleanTechnica last night:
